1960s Hemi

The 1960's

The 60's were a great decade for Hemi Powered Mopars, and Chrysler products in general. Many cars were produced that are still considered classic's today.

The first engine to actually use the Hemi name was produced in 1964. All of the 1960's Hemi engines displaced 426 CI (7 Liters). During this time only 11,000 Hemi powered vehicles were produced, but that was enough to make this powerplant a legend. During this time the Hemi engine was nicknamed the Elephant engine a reference to it's size.

In 1964 the Hemi engine was introduced to Nascar in a 1964 Plymouth Belvedere?. It meet with immediate success and earned recognition when it finished first, second, and third in the 1964 Daytona 500 race.

The 426 Hemi was manufactured from 1965 through 1971, and new engines and parts are available today from Chrysler.
